I was reading a magazine the other day and noticed the whole fashion section was about clothing under $100 dollars. At first I thought it was some random article to attract more readers but as I flip through the pages, I noticed that almost half of the magazine was about shopping sensibly and saving money which really makes me think....Did they have it wrong all along? how did the fashion industry manage to survive all these years when their only target was the rich and famous?
The recession has caused a lot of financial instability and consumer fear which has made big companies and corporations think more practically and to start making budget friendly merchandise and promoting products that are accessible to real people. Lets face it, not everyone can afford a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps or a Burberry coat.
Stores like H&M, Zara, Topshop and Uniqlo have become pioneers on the "fashion should be for everyone" mentality and have made it so much easier to shop for hot trends without the guilt. We no longer have to feel left out when we see beautiful, trendy clothing on a magazine's editorial spread.
This revolution is so big, the entire industry has taken notice.
This fashion revolution has proven that companies are actually becoming more profitable by targeting the "masses" instead of a limited privileged demographic which is now forcing big Designer Houses to come up with more affordable lines.
There has been an lot of collaborations and capsule collections such as Rodarte for Target, Jimmy Choo for H&M and Alexander Wang for the Gap which combines our love for brand name clothing and wallet friendly merchandise and proves that fashion does not have to be something unattainable.
